• Consider a comet in a highly elliptical orbit

  • Kepler’s Second Law: equal areas in equal times

• At point 1, particle has a lot of potential energy, but little kinetic energy

• Total energy = K + U is constant!

• At point 2, particle has little potential energy, but a lot of kinetic energy
